Maker`s Mark Whisky

1. Maker`s Mark Story

Maker`s Mark Distillery, situated in Loretto, Kentucky, under the ownership of Suntory Holdings in Japan, takes a unique approach by labeling its product as “Whisky” instead of the more commonly used “Whiskey” in the United States.

Its history intertwines with the migration of Scots and Irish to the United States. In 1794, to circumvent the excise tax imposed on whiskey, Kentuckians began producing Bourbon. In line with this, Robert Samuels established the Maker’s Mark Distillery in 1840. In 1958, Bill Samuels introduced a new product line. Through several changes in ownership, Makers Mark became part of Suntory Holdings in 2013.

1) Distinctive Charm in Red Wax

The distinctive appearance of Maker’s Mark’s glass bottle is notable. It features a unique red dripping wax seal. While wax seals are commonly used to prevent air contact, the flowing red wax is considered the signature of this product.

Moreover, the individuality of the flowing wax patterns adds to the brand’s appeal. Maker’s Mark even utilized the red wax in promotional items like whiskey glasses, showcasing the artistic and recognizable nature of their signature wax seal.

It stands as a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged for over 4 years to ensure high-quality craftsmanship. This small-batch, handcrafted product comes in a 750ml bottle with an alcohol content of 45%

2) Tasting Note

The golden hue captures the eye, inviting anticipation. Upon taking in the aroma, a blend of robust alcohol, smooth acetone, and notes reminiscent of vanilla and bread emanate.

The taste unfolds with a touch of spiciness. Initially, the acetone takes the lead, and as the whiskey lingers in the mouth, a sensation reminiscent of the heat when consuming mint emerges. Following this, a harmonious fusion of sweetness and vanilla comes into play. The finish leans towards the smooth side, leaving a clean impression.

When enjoyed on the rocks, the drink takes on a smoother character. The spiciness and the rough edge of alcohol are subdued. While neat consumption is generally favored, Maker’s Mark, in my personal opinion, seems more appealing on the rocks.

3. Overall Review

In conclusion, Maker’s Mark stands out as a bourbon whiskey that offers excellent value for its price. It successfully maintains the robust and distinctive character commonly associated with bourbons. While it leans towards the spicier spectrum compared to smoother Scotch whiskies, it remains on the milder side within the bourbon category.

One of Maker’s Mark’s unique features is its use of wheat instead of the more conventional rye in bourbon production. This choice imparts a delightful aroma reminiscent of bread or cookies, contributing to a smoother and sweeter profile compared to some other bourbons.

From my personal perspective, I appreciate the refreshing qualities it brings. However, it’s worth noting that some individuals might find the acetone notes challenging, especially if they have reservations about the traditional boldness of bourbons. For those moments, serving Maker’s Mark On the Rocks or in a classic Bourbon and Coke proves to be an excellent alternative.
