Teeling Single Malt Whiskey

1. Teeling Single Malt Whiskey

The focus of this article, Teeling Single Malt Whiskey, is an Irish whiskey made from 100% malt and aged in a mix of five types of wine casks (Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, and Cabernet Sauvignon). Therefore, Teeling’s Single Malt Whiskey offers a complex and varied palette of flavors and aromas, making it the best-selling Irish whiskey in the top 50 bars worldwide.

The presentation of Teeling Single Malt Whiskey is as meticulous as its production. The bottle proudly bears the inscription “Spirit of Dublin,” a tribute to its origins, alongside the Teeling Whiskey name, the designation “Single Malt,” and the indication “Non Chill” filtered, highlighting its purity and craftsmanship.

The bottling date of October 2021 and the distiller’s signature are testament to its authenticity and the personal touch in its creation. With a volume of 700ml and an alcohol content of 46%, it stands as a robust offering in the world of fine spirits.

1) Teeling Story

The Teeling Distillery’s rebirth is a story of revival and passion, with its origins dating back to 1782. After a long dormancy, the distillery was rejuvenated by Jack Teeling and Stephen Teeling, who sought to restore their family’s legacy in Dublin—a city once dotted with distilleries but which had seen them all vanish until Teeling’s return after 125 years.

This bold move not only signifies the resurgence of the Teeling brand but also marks a significant moment in Dublin’s distilling history, reintroducing the art of whiskey making to Ireland’s capital. Teeling maintains the tradition of Irish whiskey but is an innovative distillery that experiments with producing single grain whiskey and aging in special oak casks.

Teeling whiskey’s entry line consists of five varieties: Small Batch, Single Grain, Single Malt, Pot Still, and Big Peat. If given the chance, one might want to collect and compare the flavors of these varieties.

2) Tasting Notes

The color is somewhat pale but golden. The aroma has fruity scents like melon and fig, with a nutty toffee scent. While lemon is not strongly detected, citrus notes are present. Despite its 46% alcohol content, the aroma does not feel overpowering.

The taste reveals the sweetness of the fruits detected in the aroma, along with a spicy flavor that I recognized as clove for the first time. I wasn’t particularly fond of spicy scents, but the spices in this whiskey are pleasantly surprising.

The alcohol feel is so smooth that one might doubt it’s actually 46%. True to the nature of triple-distilled Irish whiskey, it’s very smooth, and a sweet vanilla flavor is noticeable upon swallowing.

The finish is sweet with vanilla and leaves a considerably long aftertaste. Some mention a dryness of wood, which I couldn’t distinctly identify.

When making a Highball, adding carbonated water, lemon, and 30ml of Teeling Single Malt Whiskey is ideal. On a hot day, a Highball is indeed refreshing. The whiskey’s sweetness and nutty flavors are well-preserved.
