Grevensteiner Original, German Beer

1. Grevensteiner Original

This article is about Grevensteiner Original, a German beer I purchased from a convenience store. Just by looking at the packaging, it gives off the impression of a rich and robust beer.

While drinking this beer, I found out that it is classified as a “Landbier.” This type of beer, also known as “cellar beer,” is an unfiltered lager from Germany, which contains more yeast compared to regular beers.

Knowing this, I can feel a richer flavor when drinking it. When poured into a glass, it has a cloudy body. Combining the information about Landbier, unfiltered lager, and the German purity law, it seems like the kind of beer that old Germans would drink instead of water.

2. Grevensteiner Brewery

Founded in 1824, Grevensteiner Brewery brewed beer according to the German purity law. Over 190 years later, this laid the foundation for Brauerei C. & A. Veltins.

Run by five generations, this brewery has maintained the highest quality and company culture, brewing premium beer with only malt, hops, yeast, and water according to the 1516 German purity law.

The brewery began to gain attention when twin brothers Carl and Anton Veltins took over the small Grevensteiner brewery. With their craftsmanship and excellent sensibility, they created Grevensteiner beer in 1926.

Over time, they modernized the brewing methods, making it the largest brewery in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, producing 1.01 million hectoliters of beer annually by 1984.

3. Tasting Notes

Grevensteiner Original has a hazy, dark amber color, and the foam is thick and robust. The aroma and flavor of the foam are quite strong, even compared to other beers I’ve tried.

The rich flavor reminds me of the intense taste of Weihenstephan’s Hefeweissbier Dunkel. The initial taste also carries some of the characteristics found in Dunkel beers. It has a bakery-like aroma.

The barley’s roasted flavor is very strong, with a noticeable but not overpowering sweetness. There is also a hint of caramel, which is quite pleasant. Looking at the ingredients, there are no additional ingredients. This truly feels like an original German beer.
