1. Tendo Whisky
This product is Tendo Whisky(Grain & Malt Whisky), which I received along with a gift of Regency brandy from an acquaintance. Visually, it is quite a unique product. The packaging and label, which openly state the Japanese style, remind me of Hakushu.
The label reads “Tendo Grain & Malt Whisky” and states that the distillation includes Japanese spirit (possibly meaning “essence” or “soul”). It also features the characters for “Tendo” in Kanji. The alcohol content is 40%, and the bottle is 350ml in volume, with an aging period of approximately two years. This whisky has a cap and includes an anti-counterfeit seal.
The back label, in English, describes Tendo Whisky as a product made with Japanese-style spirits, featuring jasmine rice flavors and aromas, followed by the richness of Scottish malt.
2. Tawandang 1999 Co. LTD
This company is located in Amphoe Han Ka, Chai Nat Province, 188km north of Bangkok, Thailand. The factory spans 316 acres and is one of the most modern liquor factories built in Asia.
They produce various spirits, including Baijiu and Thai-style vodka, as well as Korean-style soju called “Tae Yang Soju.” Tendo Whisky, made from a blend of jasmine rice and Scotch malt, Galaxy Brandy, and Thai-style blended whisky RS158 are also produced here.
3. Tasting Notes
The color resembles that of typical whisky. The aroma is strongly alcoholic, likely due to the two-year aging period, giving it a rather harsh scent. This raw, harsh characteristic is typical of young whisky.
The taste is somewhat spicy but smooth. It doesn’t stand out particularly and feels clean overall. The flavor isn’t very strong, and the malt character isn’t prominent, making it a whisky I wouldn’t highly recommend. With prolonged aeration, the spiciness diminishes, revealing a light, nutty flavor.
4. Conclusion
In conclusion, Tendo Whisky is a somewhat challenging Thai whisky to drink. The Regency brandy I tried previously was quite appealing, but this whisky, despite its attempt to emulate Japanese style, suffers from its short aging period, making it tough to enjoy.
If you visit Thailand, it might be worth trying once, but it’s not great for drinking neat. It might be more palatable as a base for a highball.
