1. The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask
The Famous Grouse, known as the famous red grouse, is called the national drink of Scotland, boasting affordable prices and the highest whisky sales in Scotland.
The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish is a slightly modified version of the standard edition (Sherry Cask Finish), following the discontinued Mellow Gold in 2019 and was released in 2023.
Among various whiskies, the reason for purchasing this product was the satisfactory memory of the standard version and because it was the first time encountering this product. With the recent popularity of sherry whiskies, even Johnnie Walker Black has come out with a sherry cask version, so I was curious about how The Famous Grouse would compare.
When purchasing, the clerk I briefly spoke with recommended it as being good straight, on the rocks, and as a highball.
2. The Famous Grouse
1) Famous Grouse Story
Founded in 1896 in a small shop in Perthshire, Scotland, the brand began with owner Matthew Gloag’s desire to share and taste the highest quality of blended whisky worldwide.
More than 125 years later, it is well-known around the world, even reaching South Korea. It is currently part of the Edrington Group, which handles main brands like Macallan and Highland Park, and is operated by Matthew Gloag & Sons.
Especially as a British royal warrant brand, it boasts quite good quality for its affordable price.
2) Tasting Notes
The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask`s color appears orange, likely due to the sherry cask. When smelling, one can sense the freshness of citrus and the sweetness of vanilla, along with a hint of spices and pear.
Tasting it, there’s a slight spicy tingle on the tongue. The texture is not thick but savory, dominated by a raisin flavor. It’s smooth, and the vanilla taste is prominent. Additionally, tasting notes also suggest the presence of dark chocolate, maple syrup, and hazelnut flavors.
The finish is somewhat short, but the peppery, spicy notes and the finish of sherry whisky are pleasantly noticeable.

3. Overall Review
Overall, The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask was better than expected. The price is somewhat expensive compared to The Famous Grouse standard version. However, it’s still considered a decent whisky for a smooth drink.
Plans include comparing the standard and sherry versions in a future tasting session, considering drinking it as a highball to note the differences. And for those looking for an affordable sherry whisky, this is recommended.
