1. The GlenGrant 12 Years
The GlenGrant 12 Year Old is a renowned single malt Scotch whisky known for its bright golden color and fresh, clean expression. Originating from the Speyside region of Scotland, the Glen Grant Distillery was founded in 1840 by brothers James and John Grant, a place famous for its ideal conditions for whisky production.
This whisky is aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak barrels. Glen Grant is particularly noted for its light and floral character, which is attributed to the use of a unique purifier in the distillation process, allowing only the lighter vapors to pass through. This technique was introduced in the late 19th century and represents the innovative spirit of the distillery, contributing not only to the improvement of whisky but also to the development of Rothes, where the distillery is located.
The GlenGrant 12 Year Old has an alcohol volume of 43% and comes in a 700ml bottle. The bottle is tall and attractive, featuring a brown label that catches the eye, sealed with a cork. The label is adorned in white and gold lettering, stating “Rothes Speyside” and “Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 12 Years.”
The GlenGrant 12 Year Old is a core product within its entry line, crafted from spirit that has been aged for at least 12 years in bourbon casks. It has also earned a high score of 95 points from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, underscoring its quality and appeal among enthusiasts.
2. GlenGrant
1) GlenGrant Story
The Glen Grant Distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland. This whisky has achieved a ranking as high as fourth in global single malt sales and is especially beloved in Italy, where it holds a 70% market share of the single malt Scotch whisky market, ranking it ninth overall in 2018.
The distillery was established in 1840 by brothers James and John Grant in a location known for its abundant water supply, including a stream called Back Burn.
In 1872, James Grant inherited the distillery and renamed it Glen Grant. He was an innovator, developing long and slender stills that contributed to a light and floral taste, as well as a purifier that enhanced the fresh malt flavors and clear color. Glen Grant was among the first distilleries in the Highlands to adopt electricity.
The distinctive design of the stills, being long and slender with a purifier attached to the end, amplifies the light and floral characteristics of the whisky.
An interesting fact about the distillery is its association with Dennis Malcolm, a legendary Master Distiller. To commemorate his 60th anniversary in the industry, Glen Grant released a special 60-year-old whisky in 2020.
2) Tasting Notes
The color of The GlenGrant 12 Year Old is a somewhat light golden hue with a delicate texture.
Upon nosing, there’s a slight acetone scent, floral notes, and sweet aromas reminiscent of vanilla or caramel. There’s also a nuttiness and a subtle hint of citrus, which overall gives the impression of a light fragrance.
Although bourbon casks are typically associated with vanilla characteristics, the initial taste leans more towards honey than vanilla. The spiciness is not prominent but is slightly noticeable towards the end.
Swallowing brings forward the nuttiness detected in the aroma, followed by a mildly bitter and dry finish that is not overly long.
Despite its 43% alcohol content, the alcohol is not overly pronounced, resulting in a smooth and clean drinking experience. Additionally, as the whisky is savored, a slight oiliness can be detected.
